About Us

Our History

In the summer of 2007, at the urging of Jack Ream from the Trinity Episcopal Church food pantry, the Tuscarawas County food pantry, the Tuscarawas County Council for Church and Community and the United Way, assembled a group of churches and other organizations in the area that had individual food pantries to consider consolidation into one large community pantry. The original reason for this consolidation was to be able to reach more people who needed food and to ensure a more equitable distribution of the food available. The Committee included a representative from Tuscarawas County of Job and Family Services, the Friends of the Homeless, the Salvation Army, and the area churches. After several months of deliberation, on January 25, 2008, the new Greater Dover New Philadelphia Food Pantry opened for the first time in the basement of the Salvation Army building. In December of that year, the Food Pantry moved to its present location at 420 West Third Street, Dover (the warehouse of the former Buehler’s store in Dover, which is now owned by Burning River Church.)

The mailing address is the Greater Dover New Philadelphia Food Pantry, PO Box 95, Dover, OH 44622. An alternative mailing address at the Pantry is now available โ€“ 422 West Third Street, Dover, OH 44622.

Because of the continuing threat of the more contagious strain of Covid, the year 2022 began as a continuation of 2021ย in which we were using a drive-thru system to distribute food. One set ofย volunteers working inside the facility loaded grocery carts with a pre-selected assortment of food items and a different group of volunteers working outside loaded the groceries into the trunks of our recipientsโ€™ vehicles. Recipients were logged into FreshTrak outside and never left their cars.

Finally, on April 1, 2022, we moved back inside to our former free-choice pantry format, where we have stayed for the remainder of the year. Over the past two years we have rearranged our Pantry layout by widening our entrance door, moving the check-in process outside along the walkway, moving the five freezers along the northwest wall, and placing the food items to be distributed around the inner perimeter of the facility. This arrangement has improved the flow of recipients through the facility and has enabled us to
distribute more items, as available.
